Day 1
As we unloaded the van, ready to take on the second house of the evening, we soon realized this house was different. It wasn’t dry, and we weren’t knocking walls down, or moving tree branches. The rooms weren’t empty. (more…)

What a strange thing it is to wake up and have a new taste in your mouth. I wonder if, after living through something like the loss of all your furniture, your family photos, your clothes, your silverware and good china and car and neighborhood, if salt tastes the same. (more…)
Lessons that stick
Friday, October 24th, 2008By Dana Mueller
The second morning of work came quicker than I would have imagined. Thankfully, God gave us all refreshing sleep, so we were able to work at full capacity all day. We returned to Gerald and Gloria’s house, with a couple extra hands to make the work go a little faster. We tackled taping and mudding the drywall, and as I’m writing this, the team is continuing with it. Our goal was to finish the mudding so we could begin painting tomorrow. Even without paint, having the drywall up gives the house a realness to it, so that I could picture a family living there. (more…)
A hard day’s work
Thursday, October 23rd, 2008EAST ORANGE, Texas – Today was another great day; however, one house had its challenges. Gerald’s home was built around the 1930s and has been passed on throughout the generations. First responders get well-deserved help
Friday, September 26th, 2008BRIDGE CITY, Texas – Today was a great day overall. We worked on cleaning up Deputy Sheriff Mike’s house today. When Ike came ashore, Deputy Mike and his fellow officers were staying in a secure bunker to weather the storm. But as the 911 calls poured in from terrified residents, they left the safety of the bunker in boats and off-road dump trucks to rescue people who otherwise may have lost their lives. (more…)
Angels of hope
Saturday, September 20th, 2008ORANGE, Texas – Today I stopped by to check on a crew of volunteers. As I drove up the the street to the home where they were working on, I passed a cemetary and saw caskets that had literally popped out of the graves. Ike’s storm surge saturated the ground so much that the caskets were uprooted from their cement graves and scattered throughout the small cemetery. (more…)
