Just a day after Hurricane Tomas unleashed heavy rains on the people of Haiti, Operation Blessing headed back to St. Marc to combat cholera with clean water.

ST. MARC, Haiti — Today we were back in the St. Marc region making sure that all of our five water units are working well. We arrived to a sad scene of flooding bought on by the storm the night before. Villagers’ houses were filled with thick filthy mud and dirty puddles of water were all over the village. (more…)

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — It seems as though Port-au-Prince was spared from the high winds that we feared might come with Hurricane Tomas. This evening there was definitely a sense of relief amongst the displaced people in the camps we serve. But for other parts of the country, the hurricane did spell disaster and this afternoon the OB Haiti team ventured out to Leogane, the epicenter of the earthquake and what seemed to also be the epicenter of suffering from today’s floods. GRANDE SALINE, Haiti – On Wednesday night we got an e-mail from Partners in Health (PIH) saying that they had reached a village called Grande Saline that had been cut off by flooding since the outbreak. There were 78 people dead there and many more were sick. (more…)

DAUPHIN, Haiti – It is past 1 a.m. and the Operation Blessing Haiti team along with doctors from St. Luc are just now leaving Dauphin. We arrived in the village early in the afternoon with one doctor, two nurses, and two SUVs full of medical supplies and Lifesaver jerrycans. (more…)

JEVIEUX, Haiti – Shortly after driving away from Operation Blessing’s Lifesaver jerrycan distribution to the stranded villagers of Luben last night, we too became stranded. Along the narrow path back, a large tap-tap had buried itself up to the axle on the only path that leads in and out of the village. We tried with no avail to use our 5-ton wench to pull the truck out of the mud and then proceeded to work with other trapped teams to squeeze dangerously close past the truck. (more…)

LUBEN, Haiti – I am sitting and drinking a cup of thick Haitian coffee trying to give my body a little jumpstart after the long and tiring hours the Operation Blessing Haiti team has worked in order to battle the cholera outbreak near St. Marc. After we had finished working into the night yesterday, we drove back to our warehouse in Port-au-Prince to restock our supply of Lifesaver jerrycans. We hoped to take them out to an area that could not be reached by trucks that can carry large water purification systems, like the three we already installed along the canal. (more…)

DAUPHIN, Haiti—Today I found myself in Port-au-Prince preparing to board a flight home after a personal trip to the mountains of Seguin. I got the call to stay in Haiti and turned my focus toward the cholera outbreak in the Artibonite region. I quickly changed plans, met up with the rest of the Operation Blessing team, and was on my way to St. Marc. We made a pit stop at the St. Nicholas Hospital to meet up with Cate Oswald from Partners In Health to see what areas were severely affected, but not yet reached. (more…)

BABOU LA PORT, Haiti – We woke to some disturbing news today. Our friends at Partners in Health emailed to say that there were people arriving at St. Nicholas hospital in droves, sick with diarrhea and that people were dying from dehydration at an alarming rate. The question was clear: Could Operation Blessing mobilize to provide clean water to an area suspected of having Haiti’s first major cholera outbreak in decades? (more…)
